02 / MATERIAL & EVIDENCE

A steel marking is a claim. Ask what supports it.

Material identity, hardness, dimensions and finished-tool performance answer different questions. One measurement or certificate cannot stand in for all four.

THE PURCHASING QUESTION

The reality

A “Cr-V” marking is not a complete purchase specification. Agree the grade, applicable specification and evidence required for the intended tool. Avoid treating one alloy label as a universal quality ranking.

A Rockwell hardness result describes hardness under a defined test method; it does not establish chemical composition or prove finished-tool torque performance. Chemical analysis addresses composition. Material documents can support conformity and traceability, but their relevance depends on the issuer, recorded tests and connection to the supplied material. A caliper photo shows a dimension at the measured point. It cannot prove the steel grade hiding beneath the finish.

QUICK REFERENCE

Match the evidence to the question

Comparison prompts for your enquiry; not an agreed specification, inspection record or test result.
ConfirmWhat to record or distinguish
Supplier documentsCheck the issuer, material or batch reference, recorded tests and connection to the ordered tools.
Hardness resultDescribes hardness under a defined method. It does not identify chemistry or prove finished-tool torque performance.
Physical measurementA caliper record shows a dimension at the measured point. It does not prove the steel grade.
Independent testingAgree chemistry or performance tests, sample selection and acceptance criteria separately. HEHE does not claim an in-house accredited lab.

BEFORE YOU ORDER

Three checks before ordering.

  1. Specify the material designation and governing specification where relevant. Request the required hardness scale, range and test locations rather than an unexplained HRC number.

  2. Ask who issued each report, what was tested, which heat or batch it identifies, and how that reference connects to the ordered tools.

  3. Separate supplier declarations, dimensional or visual checks, and independent laboratory testing. Agree any chemistry or performance tests, sample selection and acceptance criteria before ordering.

PUTTING IT INTO PRACTICE

What HEHE coordinates.

HEHE records manufacturer information separately from the physical checks we coordinate and document. Where independent testing is required, we agree its scope with the buyer and arrange an appropriate provider. We do not relabel workshop measurements as laboratory certification or imply that we operate an in-house accredited lab.
